More Info on the Location:
The Umbertine area, or Syracusan mainland, is the third historic district of the city of Syracuse. It corresponds to the southern promontory of Syracuse extended up to the island of Ortigia.
The area was built during the urban expansion on the mainland in the last decades of the 19th century. Its main streets are: corso Umberto I, piazzale Guglielmo Marconi, viale Regina Margherita, viale Montedoro and via Malta.
The two bridges that connect Ortigia to the rest of the city fall within the area: the Santa Lucia bridge on the right side of the large port, and on its left the older central Umberto I bridge.
Between Corso Umberto and Piazzale Marconi, inside the public gardens known locally as the villas, the remains of the agora with the pavement and columns of the ancient square are visible. Here is also the Syracusan forum.
Cicero in Verrine describes the arcades, the seat of city power (Prytaneum), the sundial of Dionysius, the altar of Concordia and the temple of Zeus.
To the north-east of the site, stands the shrine to the "fallen of the great war" (also called the Pantheon) built in 1936 and the work of the Rapisardi brothers from Catania.
